Before a single rubber duck hits the water on Saturday for the Educational Foundation of Lake County's "No Duck Left Behind Rubber Ducky Race," a handful of students can already be considered winners.

OVERALL POSTER WINNER LIZ YUNKER

The Educational Foundation announced this week the winners and honorable mentions of the No Duck Left Behind essay and poster contests. Winners of the essay contest will receive $50 and an official T-shirt and their teachers will receive a $50 classroom grant and a T-shirt. The honorable mentions and their teachers will receive an official T-shirt. Winners and honorable mentions included:

  • 9th-12th grade winner: Travis Horton, Tavares High
    (Teacher Melissa Newman)
    • Honorable mention: Savannah Guenther, Tavares High (Teacher Melissa Newman)
    • Honorable mention: Sarah Bostic, Tavares High
      (Teacher Elizabeth Musselwhite)
  • 3rd-5th grade winner: Jasmine Ramjett, Beverly Shores Elem. (Teacher Linnell Koffarnus)
    • Honorable mention: Katiana Casimir, Clermont Elem. (Teacher Annette Smith)
    • Honorable mention: Molly Dench, Triangle Elem.
      (Teacher Constance Bame)

The category and overall winner for the poster contest receives $25 and an official T-shirt. Their teacher gets an official T-shirt as well. Overall teacher winner is awarded a $200 classroom grant. Honorable mentions and teachers receive an official T-shirt. Winners and honorable mentions included:

  • Overall Winner: Liz Yunker, 11th grade, Tavares High (Teacher Asieh Mickens)
  • 9th-12th grade winner: Edward Krupicka, 10th, Lake Minneola High (Teacher Kimberly Madrid)
    • Honorable mention: Jennifer Torres, 11th, Tavares High (Teacher Asieh Mickens)
    • Honorable mention: Cara D'Ambrosio, 12th, South Lake High (Teacher Katherine VanBeek)
  • 3rd-5th grade winner: Andrea Reyes, 5th grade, Groveland Elem. (Teacher Sheri Spivey)
    • Honorable mention: Jack Sweeney, 3rd, Pine Ridge Elem. (Teacher Whitney Kreiling)
    • Honorable mention : Kacey Barry, 4th, Groveland Elem. (Teacher Dina Lally)
  • K-2nd grade winner: Valerie Damon, 2nd grade, Tavares Elem. (Teacher Charlotte Johnson)
    • Honorable mention: James Kay, 1st, Astatula Elem. (Teacher Kristen Sears)
    • Honorable mention: Love Cason, Kindergarten, Rimes Early Learning Center (Teacher Stephanie Gilbert)

The "No Duck Left Behind Rubber Ducky Race" is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wooton Park in Tavares. Proceeds benefit teachers and students in Lake County public schools. In addition to the grand prize college scholarship of $5,000, five other winners will receive prizes valued at more than $5,000. A carnival is free to the public and will feature 50 booths from area schools with food, games and souvenirs as well as moonwalks, obstacle courses and slides.
