A 24-year-old Indian Hills woman was jailed Wednesday on $10,000 bail charged with stealing a handgun from her stepmother.
Melissa Cahill-Livergood is charged with ex-felon in possession of a firearm and grand larceny of a firearm.
She was accused of taking a .38-caliber Taurus handgun, valued at $450, from a locked gun safe in the victim's bedroom and pawning it for $90.
The victim said she noticed the weapon missing about five weeks after she last used it. She told deputies she carried the firearm with her on walks in case she came upon wildlife or animals on the trail.
A few days later, the victim reported she also was missing jewelry.
A Douglas County sheriff's investigator contacted pawn shops in Carson City and located the missing handgun through its serial number.
Livergood reportedly sold the revolver to the pawn shop for $90, and several pieces of jewelry for $25.
She also reportedly pawned two digital cameras, Oakley sunglasses, an iPod and a guitar also belonging to the victim.
Investigators confirmed that Livergood was on probation for felony eluding a peace officer in Washoe County.
She lives at the victim's residence and had access to the property, according to the report.
She was arrested March 7 on a warrant. Deputies reportedly found aluminum foil with burned residue believed to be heroin and two smoking tubes in the suspect's bedroom.
The property was recovered and returned to the victim, according to reports.
Justice Pro Tem Paul Gilbert appointed Kris Brown to represent Livergood and set her next court appearance for Wednesday.
