FebFast is an important movement. It is a movement which addresses one of the most prevalent issues in today’s world: addictions. An addiction is more than just a habit; an addiction can ultimately take control of a person’s life whereas we have control over our habits. We can recognize our habits, change our routines and enable a healthier lifestyle, which is a privilege those suffering from addiction may not afford. This is why the FebFast movement resonates with me – it is an opportunity to control my own bad habits, raise money to improve the lives of vulnerable youths dealing with alcohol, drug and mental health issues and bring awareness to the greater issue of addiction. Until the end of Feb, I won’t be touching alcohol, sugar or caffeine…ambitious, I know.
I’ve started off well, not missing alcohol at all. This may be due to the fact that I have purchased a Time Out pass, which lends me one day of my vices. I struggled with the idea of a Time Out pass, because I initially saw it as cheating. I then reasoned with myself and conceded that if the event was confirmed prior to signing up to FebFast, then fair is fair. The two cups of coffee I have a day to keep me awake during my split shift are being sorely missed – I started missing coffee the morning of Feb 1st. I thought sugar would be the easiest to give up, but that’s because I was completely ignorant and didn’t realise sugar is in EVERYTHING I like, so I am struggling. If anything, Day three has sucked the most so far and I would have really enjoyed making myself feel better by eating some lollies with a latte and chasing it with some kind of wine.
I’m feeling focused heading into week two and, amazingly, feel quite focused in many aspects of my life…could it be working already?! Can’t wait to see how great I feel at the end, if I am able to walk past all those cafes, clubs and milk bars, that is…
