2005 was the year that all this changed. I ran my first Melbourne Marathon and the journey that took me from non-runner to marathon finisher altered my perspective of the world. I realised that I hadn’t been taking enough responsibility for my own actions and predictable outcomes.
Since this epiphany, I have completely switched my approach. I constantly test myself in new ways – whether it’s getting an amazing job with Google, then dealing with redundancy during the GFC, to subsequently running 52 marathons in 52 weeks around the world in 2010. I then wrote a successful novel, Run Like Crazy, in 2012, became a successful motivational speaker and recently started my own network of running clubs.
I see each outcome as a lesson and each adventure as an opportunity to test my new knowledge. I have grown significantly each year and don’t mind using myself as a human guinea pig to find a challenge, take myself outside my comfort zone and embrace a new me.
And now FebFast 2014?! I have tried going off sugar in the past, losing 5kg in just 4 weeks. I have been off alcohol for a month at a time quite regularly in the past few years. But I have never tried to ditch caffeine, alcohol and sugar all at once!?!
I’m prone to doing most things in excess, so I got a start on this early. I stopped drinking on New Year’s Eve 2013 at 11:50pm. I stopped drinking coffee 5 days later. I’ve been stuffing my face with chocolate in a vain attempt to make myself sick of sugar before Feb 1st, where I will continue to deprive myself of all the things that are keeping my body from functioning at its very best!
I want to know what that’s like. I’m super fit and pretty switched on, but I can’t imagine how good I’ll feel once I get all this rubbish flushed out of my system too. I might be Super Me?!
I encourage you all to join me on this quest to create a more impressive version of yourself. I truly think we’ll all feel a whole lot better as a result. My tip for success is pretty obvious – Get your body moving as much as possible to sweat out all the crap! Ride, Swim, Run, Walk, Roll, Skip, Twirl, Jump, Pump, Dance, Yoga or whatever else you can do to restore the balance of your body. This is an opportunity for real change, so make the most of it.
Hell, I’m going to try and run a 100km race on the border of India & Pakistan, smack in the middle of FebFast, without sugar or a celebratory beer?!
————————-
To remove the excuses, I’ll be hosting a free RunLikeCrazy Running Group from the reception area at Melbourne Sports & Acquatic Centre (MSAC) from 6:00pm each Wednesday. It’ll be open to all levels and we’ll run laps of the Albert Park lake together – as a TEAM.
Good luck with your FebFast and here’s to finding a fit and healthy new you!
