Yesterday’s first round of the NFL Draft proved incredibly exciting, riveting TV. In fact, days earlier I had seen Draft Day, the movie about how GM Sonny Weaver went crazy at the Draft for the Cleveland Browns.
Well, this Draft was no movie, it was for real. And the Cleveland Browns were for real, too. They were all over this year’s first round, trading away their number four pick to Buffalo and then trading up from 9 to 8 to get Justin Gilbert, and then trading up from 26 to 22 to get the now-famous Johnny Manziel.
The fall of Manziel all the way to 22 was shades of the slide of QB Bo Callahan in that Draft Day movie.
Seeing Manziel drop and drop and drop proved hilarious on Twitter, not to mention on ESPN, where Jon Gruden was slobbering over Manziel all night and always predicting he would be the next one to be picked. Gruden was made to look like a fool, over and over again.
In any event it made for one of the more entertaining NFL drafts in memory. And of course, the draft is still going on.
I guess the big question now is: where does Michael Sam go in the draft? That news will surely be the next thing to get folks down in the Uptight States of America all excited. (The way things have been going, he’ll probably end up in Cleveland.)
