Original headline: Thornton Road’s $2.6M makeover
Heavy truck traffic and poor storm drainage have contributed to the deterioration of parts of Thornton Road, and on Monday, the Casa Grande City Council approved a $223K engineering design contract as the first step in planning a multimillion-dollar makeover for the road. Tucson-based Schlesinger Consulting Engineering has been hired to do the design work. Revenue from the city’s construction sales tax is funding the study.
Fixing the road, from Gila Bend Highway to Cottonwood Lane, is expected to cost about $2.6M, city Traffic Engineer Duane Eitel told the council.
City officials plan to remove and replace existing pavement and enhance the subgrade of the street. The edge of the curb will remain the same, Eitel said. The street’s width and alignment will be maintained. Drainage will be improved.
Work will be divided in two phases. Phase one, expected to cost about $1.5M, would run from the Gila Bend Highway to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The second phase has an estimated cost of about $1.1M and will include work from the railroad tracks to Cottonwood Lane.
