Drew Carey was disgusted by a cruel ALS Ice Bucket Challenge prank a group of teenagers played on an autistic classmate. So Carey decided to do something about it, offering a $10,000 reward to those who help bring these bullies to justice.
The ALS ice bucket challenge started off as a fun way to increase awareness for the horrific disease. A person would dump a bucket of ice water over his head and then nominate others to do the same. The nominees would then perform the challenge themselves and/or donate funds to the cause. The campaign was a major success, raising $108 million for the ALS Association.
But it was likely only a matter of time before this endeavor took a sour turn. Last week, the mother of an autistic teen in Bay Village, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland) revealed that her son was tricked into participating in a cruel version of the challenge. Instead of just dumping ice water on the special-needs boy, several of his classmates dumped a concoction made of feces, urine, spit and cigarette butts. You can watch the (highly disturbing) video of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge prank here.
“He was embarrassed because he did not know what the contents were until afterwards, and then he didn’t want anybody to know,” the boy’s mother said of this ALS Ice Bucket Challenge prank. “They used his phone to tape it, and they put it up on Instagram.”
Local residents quickly rallied around the autistic teen, and area police pledged to bring charges against those involved. Now several celebrities, most notably Drew Carey, are also helping bring the bullies behind this cruel ALS Ice Bucket Challenge prank to justice. When Carey, a Cleveland native, saw the story online, he tweeted about the “horrendous” act and promised a reward for those who help catch the culprits. If police find the bullies without the reward, Drew Carey will instead donate the cash to Autism Speaks.
Since then, other celebrities have joined the crusade to find those responsible for this ALS Ice Bucket Challenge prank against an autistic teen.
Currently, there is no word on whether police have any leads in identifying these cruel ALS Ice Bucket Challenge pranksters. But hopefully the celebrity campaigning will help authorities locate the culprits.
